Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen (b. 1958)

Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen did his A levels in 1977, modern languages branch. He graduated from the University of Copenhagen in 1995 with the subjects music and philosophy. He took a diploma in church music in 1985 with Eileen Vandermark, Finn Viderø and Jens E. Christensen and graduated with a diploma in composition from the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen in 1988, where his teachers were Yngve Jan Trede, Ib Nørholm, Hans Abrahamsen and Paul Cooper. He was at a composers? class at the Academy of Music in Aarhus in 1990, taught by Per Nørgård and Karl Aage Rasmussen. He had his debut in the spring of 1991.

Between 1983 and 1990 Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen was an active member of various Danish associations of contemporary music. He later became a member of the board of the Danish Composers? Society and a member of the music branch of the Danish Arts Foundation. He works as an organist at Mariendals Kirke and teaches theory and composition at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense. Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen has received several grants such as the three year scholarship from the Danish Arts Foundation (1989), the Hafnia Travelling Scholarship (1989) and the grant from the Leonie Sonning Music Foundation (1992). The latter was awarded as a support for the work on the book on Per Nørgård called Virkeligheden fortæller mig altid flere historier (Reality always tells me several tales), which also formed the basis of his thesis at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Copenhagen.

Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen has written music in practically all genres: Rock, orchestral-, chamber- and solo works as well as operas and film music. From 1990 onwards his main interest has been chamber music. Important works from these years include Fabel, Serenade, Into the Black, Over Styx and Swamp Thing.

According to the accounts from KODA (the Danish Copyright Bureau) the music of Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen has been performed at all continents except North America and Africa.

Nysproglig student 1977. Cand.mag. i musik og filosofi fra Københavns Universitet (1995), Kirkemusikalsk Diplomeksamen (1985 - uddannet ved bla. Eileen Wandermark, Finn Viderø og Jens E. Christensen), Diplomeksamen i komposition fra DKDM (1988; uddannet ved Yngve Jan Trede, Ib Nørholm, Hans Abrahamsen og Paul Cooper). Komponistklasse ved Det Jydske Musikkonservatorium (1990; med Per Nørgård og Karl Aage Rasmussen som lærere); debutkoncert efteråret 1991.

I årene 1983-90 var Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen aktiv i landets ny-musik organisationer. Senere medlem af Dansk Komponist Forenings bestyrelse og Statens Musikråd. Ansat som organist i Mariendals Kirke og underviser i teori og komposition på Det Fynske Musikkonservatorium. Af større legater har Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen modtaget Statens Kunstfonds 3-årige arbejdslegat (1989), Hafnias Rejselegat (1989), samt Leonie Sonnings Musikfonds legat (1992). Sidstnævnte blev tildelt til støtte for arbejdet med Nørgård-bogen, Virkeligheden fortæller mig altid flere historier, som også gav stof til specialet ved musikvidenskabeligt institut.

Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen har skrevet musik i næsten alle genrer: Rock, orkester-, kammer-, solo-værker, såvel som opera og filmmusik. Fra 1990 har hovedinteressen ligget på kammermusik. Af vigtigere værker fra disse år kan nævnes: Fabel, Serenade, Flowerfall, Into the Black, Over Styx og Swamp Thing.

Ifølge KODA-afregningerne er musikken opført på alle jordens kontinenter på nær Nordamerika og Afrika.
